// VAT vs Sales Tax

VAT (Value Added Tax) is charged at each stage of production. Sales tax is only charged at the final point of sale. Both increase the consumer price, but VAT is more common globally.

// SA VAT

South Africa's VAT rate is 15% (increased from 14% in 2018). Basic foodstuffs like bread, milk, and maize meal are zero-rated. VAT vendors can claim input VAT on business expenses.

// Removing VAT

To extract VAT from an inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate). At 15%, divide the inclusive price by 1.15 to get the excl. amount. The difference is the VAT portion.

// Global Rates

UK: 20%, EU: 17-27%, Australia (GST): 10%, Canada (GST): 5%, India (GST): 5-28%, SA: 15%. The US uses sales tax instead, varying by state (0-10%).
